Finding Your Niche: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Growth

Have you ever heard the saying, "the riches are in the niches"? It's a popular phrase in the entrepreneurial world, and for good reason. Finding your niche can be the key to unlocking your potential and achieving success. But how do you find your niche, especially when you have a multitude of interests and passions?

It's a question I've been asked many times, and one that I've grappled with myself. As someone who loves doing a lot of things, I understand the struggle of trying to narrow down your focus. Whether it's your podcast, your app, your coaching business, your latest social channel, or even your chicken-flavoured cake business, it can be hard to decide which one to focus on.

Starting Point: Embrace the Uncertainty

The first step in finding your niche is to understand that you probably won't get it exactly right at the beginning. And that's okay. The important thing is to pick something that feels "about right" and start from there.

Engage, Share, and Learn

Once you've chosen a potential niche, the next step is to engage with it. Talk about it, share content related to it, and engage with others in the same space. This is a crucial part of the process because it's only through engaging with our area of interest that we learn whether it's truly a space for us or not.

For example, if you're interested in starting a podcast, start by talking to other podcasters. Share content related to podcasting on your social media channels. Engage with your audience and ask them what they think about your podcast idea. This will give you valuable insights into whether this is the right niche for you.

Try It On For Size

Another important aspect of finding your niche is to "try it on for size." This means actually diving in and getting your hands dirty. Start that podcast, launch that app, or bake that chicken-flavoured cake. You can't truly know if a niche is right for you until you've experienced it firsthand.

As you engage with your chosen niche, you'll start to get a feel for it. You'll learn what works and what doesn't, what you enjoy and what you don't. This will help you refine your niche and make it more aligned with who you are and what you want to achieve.

The Evolution of Your Niche

As you engage with your niche and try it on for size, you'll likely find that it evolves over time. This is a natural part of the process. Your initial idea may not be the perfect fit, but as you learn and grow, you'll refine your niche and make it your own.

When It's Not Really You

There may come a time when you realise that your chosen niche isn't really you. This can be a tough realisation, but it's an important one. It's better to recognise this early on and pivot, rather than sticking with something that doesn't align with your passions and goals.

When this happens, don't be discouraged. It's not a failure, but a learning opportunity. Take what you've learned and use it to find a niche that is a better fit for you.

Finding Your Best Fit

More often than not, you'll find that your niche evolves into something that you're naturally a best fit for. This is the beauty of the process. As you engage with your niche, share content, and try it on for size, you'll naturally gravitate towards what works best for you.

Remember, finding your niche is a journey, not a destination. It's about discovering who you are, what you're passionate about, and how you can use that to create value for others. So embrace the process, learn from your experiences, and keep moving forward.
